Pottsville Offers Free Downtown Parking for Holiday Shoppers

POTTSVILLE —  Starting Monday, people won’t have to worry about feeding the meter in downtown Pottsville. The city is offering free parking for holiday shoppers. GIRARDVILLE — A convenience store in a small Schuylkill County community is bringing big relief to shoppers who have had to travel out of town to get their groceries. Fire Chases Woman Out of Bed in Schuylkill County

PORTER TOWNSHIP — Flames chased a woman from her bed Monday morning in Schuylkill County. A fire gutted a house on Wiconiso Street near Tower City after midnight on Monday. The assistant fire chief tells us fire alarms inside the place woke the owner. She made it out safely. Crews believe the fire started in the back of the house and spread. There is no word on what caused the fire here in Schuylkill County.

Explosion at Turkey Farm in Schuylkill County

WALKER TOWNSHIP — An explosion rocked a turkey farm in Schuylkill County. Firefighters tell Newswatch 16 flames destroyed a barn at Koch’s Turkey Farm on Zehners Crossing Drive near Tuscarora. The fire also damaged equipment, but no turkeys were hurt. Investigators are looking into what caused the explosion.

Body of Missing Man From Schuylkill County Found

WEST BRUNSWICK TOWNSHIP — State police say they have found the body of a missing man from Schuylkill County. Izzy Whalen of Orwigsburg was found dead Friday afternoon near Carlisle. The 23-year-old went missing in early November. His friends and family held a prayer vigil Thursday night for him. His family said Izzy had a history of depression and mental health issues. State police do not believe there is anything suspicious about the death.

Tremont Man Recovers as Troopers Search for Attackers

TREMONT — A man is recovering after a home invasion and brutal beating in Schuylkill County. State police say around 3 a.m. Monday morning, two men entered Richard Stewart’s home in Tremont through an unlocked door. Once inside, investigators say those men beat 73-year-old Stewart with a mental object, seriously injuring his face and eye, then tied him up with duct-tape. Deadly Crash in Schuylkill County

WAYNE TOWNSHIP — One person is dead following a crash in Schuylkill County. The wreck happened along Route 183 just outside Cressona around 3:30 p.m. Monday. The deputy coroner said one person was killed. The victim’s name has not been released. Police have not said what caused the deadly crash.

Man Wanted for Scamming Stores in Several Counties

SCOTT TOWNSHIP — Locally owned hardware stores are being targeted by an accused thief, wanted for hitting stores in several parts of our area. Arrest warrants show the same man is wanted in three different counties for cheating the hardware stores, and his victims are at least four different stores in Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Schuylkill counties.
